In Malaysia, the new Trademark Law has been approved by the Parliament on July 02, 2019.

With the introduction of new law, registration of shapes, colours and sounds has been made possible whilst the former Trademark law had only permitted the registration of names, labels, numbers, characters and signatures.

In addition to this, Madrid Protocol pertaining to international trademark registrations has been also approved by the Malaysian Parliament. Once Malaysia ascends to the treaty, Malaysia can be chosen as one of the designated countries for international trademark applications.
