TURKEY: FINES FOR SOCIAL MEDIA GIANTS DUE TO INCOMPLIANCE WITH THE NEW SOCIAL MEDIA LAW

In Turkey, a new social media law has entered into force on October 1, 2020.

As per the law, social media platforms which are accessed over 1 million times per day are required to appoint their local representatives in Turkey in due time.

Upon the expiration of the initial 30 days period, platforms had been fined around USD 1.2 million for non-compliance.

However, since non-compliance with the new law has still taken place upon expiration of the second 30 days period, social media companies such as Facebook, Instagram and Twitter have been fined USD 3.8 million by the Information and Communication Technologies Authority.

In case these platforms do not appoint local representative by 90 days, additional sanctions will be imposed pursuant to the new law.
